Steelers offensive tackle Broderick Jones blocks Browns defensive end Myles Garrett in the Oct. 12 game in Pittsburgh.

In Tuesday’s “First Call, Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Broderick Jones discusses his matchup with Micah Parsons when Green Bay visits Acrisure Stadium on Sunday night. An ex-Steeler made an impressive defensive play during “Monday Night Football. Justin Fields is in limbo as the New York Jets’ starting quarterback.

Plus, we have a preview of Tuesday’s Penguins game as the Vancouver Canucks come to town.

Parsons problem

The Steelers’ offensive line has shown significant improvement in recent weeks. Aaron Rodgers hasn’t been sacked during the past two games against the Cincinnati Bengals or the Cleveland Browns.

That effort included shutting out Cleveland All-Pro Myles Garrett, who walked away from Acrisure Stadium with no sacks and two tackles two weeks ago.

Now Broderick Jones and the rest of the offensive line have to deal with four-time Pro Bowler Micah Parsons and the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night. That team racked up six sacks against the Cardinals during their 27-23 win in Arizona last week. Parsons had three of them.

The former Penn State star went to Green Bay in a trade from Dallas in August. He has 5½ sacks so far this year.

“He’s just relentless, Jones said Monday via the Steelers YouTube channel. “He doesn’t stop like most people in the league. It sets him apart because he has a motor about him. He has a deep bag of tools. He has finesse to his game. The Packers do a good job of moving him around — from the inside to the outside to lining up at linebacker. We’ve got a lot of film to break down.

The Steelers also have to be aware of Rashan Gary. He has 5½ sacks as well.

Maulet makes a play

A former Steeler contributed to a win in a hurry for his new team.

Detroit cornerback Arthur Maulet had an interception of Tampa Bay’s Baker Mayfield on “Monday Night Football.”

Maulet had just signed with the Lions’ practice squad on Oct. 8. He was only promoted to the active roster on Monday before the game.

The 32-year-old was most recently on a team in August when he was part of the final roster cuts in Houston. He had been in Pittsburgh for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Maulet and the Lions (5-2) went on to beat Tampa (5-2) by a final score of 24-9. Mayfield had a season-low passer rating of 66.1.

Figuring out Fields

Aaron Glenn says he is still trying to determine what he will do at quarterback next week. The New York Jets (0-7) coach benched ex-Steeler Justin Fields for ineffective play during Sunday’s 13-6 loss to the Carolina (4-3).

Via NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the rookie head coach is seeking advice from other coaches who have had to deal with quarterback issues in the past.

Trailing 13-3 in the third quarter, Glenn pulled Fields in favor of Tyrod Taylor. At the time, Fields was 6 of 12 for 46 yards. Last week, Fields was just 9 of 17 for 45 yards in the Jets’ 13-11 loss to Denver. The team had a franchise-worst minus-10 net yards passing.

Taylor finished the afternoon 10 of 22 for 126 yards with two interceptions and three sacks. Fields had 22 yards rushing. Taylor had 11.

Switch out the luggage

The Penguins have a chance to repack their bags before heading on the road again. They host the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night.

Following a three-game road trip to California, the Pens head to Florida on Thursday to face the defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers. Pittsburgh lost its game in Anaheim to open the trip, but then won in Los Angeles and San Jose before heading home.

The Canucks come in winners of three in a row on the road. They are in the middle of a five-game road trip and have beaten Dallas, Chicago and Washington to open it up. They’ll go to Nashville on Thursday after skating at PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday night.

Former NHL defenseman Adam Foote took over as Vancouver’s head coach following the departure of ex-Penguin Rick Tocchet. They’ve gotten good goaltending so far from Thatcher Demko, who is 3-1-0 with a 2.28 goals against average and a save percentage of .922.

Connor Garland leads the team with six points. Kiefer Sherwood is tops with four goals.

Vancouver beat the Pens in Canada, 4-3, in October of last year. They lost in Pittsburgh, 5-4, behind two goals by Bryan Rust.

Via TribLive’s Seth Rorabaugh, it is likely former Canuck Arturs Silovs will be in net for the Pens on Tuesday night.
