For Friday’s “First Call,” I want to introduce you to my new favorite Pittsburgh Pirate.
It’s recently signed center fielder Jarrod Dyson. He just inked a one-year contract for $2 million.
I know. I know. I previously endorsed Kevin Pillar as my choice to replace Starling Marte.
But forget him. He’s reportedly signing in Boston. Dyson is my guy now.
Why?
Because of his speed? His defensive ability? His daring stolen bases?
No!
His honesty. That’s why. Because, apparently, on his first day as a Pirate, Dyson has immediately become the first member of the organization to grasp the concept …
… of transparency.
When Dyson — previously a free agent without a better offer — was asked why he chose Pittsburgh, this is what he said.
“Ain’t too much out there right now, you know,” Dyson responded. “You’d love to explore. But at the same time, you take what you can. Take the good with the bad and roll with it. Make the most of it.”
Wow! What a ringing endorsement of his new team.
“Pittsburgh Pirates baseball: Make the most of it.”
Hey, it’s no “Come Hungry.” But not bad.

So, I’ll “take what I can.”
And play for the Pirates.
I guess.
