First Call: Seahawks injury news; Giants sticking with Russell Wilson; Tyler Glasnow exits during no-hitter

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson looks up at the scoreboard during the second half of a game against the Washington Commanders, Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025, in Landover, Md.

Tuesday’s “First Call” has injury news for the Seattle Seahawks as they get ready to arrive at Acrisure Stadium for Sunday’s game against the Steelers.

We check in on Russell Wilson’s status in New York, and we update the health of a former Steeler who was injured for Miami.

Plus, we give you the Pirates-Orioles pitching matchups for their upcoming series at Camden Yards, and we tell you how close Tyler Glasnow came to a no-hitter for Los Angeles on Monday.

Wounded Seahawk

As the Seattle Seahawks prepare to visit Pittsburgh Sunday for the Steelers’ home opener, they’ll likely be arriving without a high-profile rookie.

Safety Nick Emmanwori might have a trip to injured reserve in his future because of a high ankle sprain. That news comes from head coach Mike Macdonald via Brady Henderson of ESPN.com.

Mike Macdonald said S Nick Emmanwori actually does have a high ankle sprain (he said postgame it didn't look like one), and that a stint on IR is under consideration. Emmanwori went down on the fifth play of his NFL debut.

Emmanwori was the No. 35 overall pick in the 2025 draft. At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, the South Carolina product had a great Combine performance to open eyes in the pre-draft process. He ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash.

Emmanwori lasted just five snaps in his NFL debut at San Francisco before the injury, registering one tackle for loss. He’s a backup to Coby Bryant and Julian Love on the depth chart.

Expect Josh Jobe — who had an interception last week — to absorb some of the snaps in Emmanwori’s absence.

Giant question

Despite a bumpy debut as the New York Giants quarterback, Russell Wilson will hold that job for at least one more week as the team prepares to face the Dallas Cowboys.

Wilson was just 17-of-37 passing for 168 yards as New York dropped its opener to the Washington Commanders, 21-6. He was sacked twice, hit eight times and pressured 13 times.

“It’s an emotional game, it’s a tough game,” coach Brian Daboll said Monday via the New York Post. “In terms of making any of those decisions — really, at any position or schematic changes — I’d like to do it with a clear head and watch the tape. That game doesn’t fall on Russell Wilson. We’ve got to do a better job collectively — coaching, playing — but Russ will be the starter.”

That said, ESPN’s Adam Schefter went on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday and said he expects to see Daboll go to rookie prospect Jaxson Dart soon enough.

After visiting Dallas this week, five of New York’s next six opponents went to the playoffs in 2024. Two of those games are against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Rough start again

Ex-Steeler James Daniels saw his Steelers career end in 2024 with a torn Achilles tendon during the team’s Week 4 contest in Indianapolis.

The offensive lineman was heading into free agency this winter and knew at the time that the injury would probably end his days in Pittsburgh. Mason McCormick’s capable performance at guard as a rookie secured that fate.

So Daniels hit the market and signed with the Miami Dolphins this offseason to the tune of $24 million over three years. Now, after just one game, he is injured again. According to SI.com in Miami, the 27-year-old suffered a pectoral injury to some degree. Coach Mike McDaniel said that Daniels would be out for at least a few weeks, but didn’t speculate beyond that.

Daniels is one of four injured Dolphins starters from Week 1. Right tackle Austin Jackson, defensive tackle Benito Jones and cornerback Storm Duck also got hurt in the 33-8 Week 1 defeat in Indianapolis.

Hello O’s

The pitching matchups are up on MLB.com for the Pirates-Orioles series, which starts Tuesday in Baltimore.

Mike Burrows (2-4, 4.08 ERA) will start the opener for the Bucs. Kyle Bradish opposes for the Orioles (0-1, 3.60). Burrows got a win in his last appearance when he pitched a scoreless three innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Paul Skenes goes for Pittsburgh (10-9, 1.98) against Tyler Wells (1-0, 3.60).

This is Skenes’ first career start against the Orioles. He’s suffered only one loss on his record since July 11. That covers a span of nine starts.

Wells, a 31-year-old right-hander, made his 2025 debut on Wednesday. He had missed the previous 508 days of game action because of UCL surgery.

Thursday afternoon’s series finale features Johan Oviedo (2-0, 2.70) versus an Orioles starter to be announced.

ESPN.com has Cade Povich (3-7, 5.16) slated to go. He got a victory in his last game against San Diego. That was his first since June 15.

Tyler time

Tyler Glasnow was nearly part of a no-hitter for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.

The former Pirate was pulled after seven innings of no-hit ball against the Colorado Rockies. Along the way, he allowed an earned run on two walks. But he totaled 11 strikeouts on 105 pitches.

Blake Treinen came in and threw a clean eighth inning. But Tanner Scott gave up a hit to lead off the ninth.

Ryan Ritter was the batter who broke it up.

Los Angeles ended up winning 3-1. The Dodgers sit atop the National League West at 80-64. That’s one game better than the San Diego Padres (79-65) and 40 games better than the last-place Rockies (40-104).

San Diego is currently the NL’s top wild card team, two games behind the Chicago Cubs (81-63).
