First Call: Steelers reportedly outbid for Jakobi Meyers; Chargers get offensive line help
We’re getting details on what it would’ve cost the Steelers to land a pair of wide receivers before Tuesday’s trade deadline.
The Los Angeles Chargers helped themselves in advance of Sunday’s game against the Steelers, and a pair of local college hockey players are getting some well-deserved recognition.
All that and more in Wednesday’s “First Call.”
More for Meyers
If you listen to at least one national report, the Pittsburgh Steelers did try to land Las Vegas wide receiver Jakobi Meyers before the trade deadline on Tuesday.
However, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Jacksonville Jaguars offered a better return — a fourth- and sixth-round pick in 2026.
“Pittsburgh expressed some interest in Jakobi Meyers, but obviously Jacksonville really stepped up to get something done here,” Schefter said on “The Pat McAfee Show” Tuesday. “Those are the two teams, I think, that really wanted to add Meyers to their roster.”

If the Steelers really wanted Meyers, I’d be disappointed if they felt like a fourth- and sixth-round pick was too much to offer. The franchise has three third-round picks, two fourth-rounders, two fifth-rounders and two sixth-rounders.
General manager Omar Khan could’ve exceeded that return if he had been motivated enough to do so. Clearly, he wasn’t.
Meyers had 32 catches for 352 yards and no touchdowns in seven games this season.
Meanwhile in Miami
Some Steelers fans had visions of Jaylen Waddle dancing in their heads.
Fans of other teams did, too. The Miami wide receiver was believed to be available for a trade offer.
But, apparently, that offer had to be a first-round pick and more. No one was willing to fork over a package like that for the 26-year-old pass catcher. That’s according to KOA radio’s Benjamin Allbright.
Dolphins wanted a 1st and more for Waddle, teams weren’t willing.

Waddle has 350 catches, 4,715 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns over his first 71 NFL games.

Not sitting around
Meanwhile, the Steelers’ opponent this week, the Los Angeles Chargers, had a glaring need, and they tried to address it before Tuesday’s trade deadline.
The franchise acquired offensive lineman Trevor Penning from the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick.
He’ll come to L.A. with the duty of filling the void left by injuries to starting offensive tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater. Replacement tackle Bobby Hart was also injured Sunday, leaving the game with a groin injury and an ankle injury.
Penning was the 19th pick out of Northern Iowa in the 2022 NFL Draft. He has played both tackle positions and guard during his NFL career. This is the final year of his rookie contract.
Hockey honors
A pair of local college hockey standouts were honored for their efforts this past weekend.
Tanner Klimpke of Robert Morris is the Atlantic Hockey America Forward of the Week. He netted three goals during a two-game series sweep by the Colonials over Niagara.
Klimpke posted two goals in RMU’s 4-2 home win on Friday. He added another Saturday as the Colonials won again, 4-3.

Penn State’s J.J. Wiebusch was named the Big Ten’s Second Star of the Week. The Nittany Lions sophomore scored a power-play goal in both games last week as PSU swept Ohio State, 3-2 and 4-3.

Wiebusch added a primary assist for a two-point effort in the series finale last Friday. That was his team-leading sixth multi-point game of the season.
The Wisconsin native has notched at least one point in nine of 10 games this season. He has goals in eight of those games, including five straight. His 18 points are second in the country. His 11 goals lead the nation.
This weekend, RMU hosts Long Island. Third-ranked Penn State is at No. 1 Michigan State.
