Fishing report: Youghiogheny yielding plenty of flathead catfish, channel catfish
• Anglers visiting the Youghiogheny River are bringing back flathead catfish and channel catfish in solid numbers. The flathead catfish appear to be more prevalent, while the channel catfish are most active around dusk. The channel catfish are biting at typical live baits such as chicken livers. Meanwhile, a few anglers are reporting walleye catches. The dawk and dusk hours are particularly productive for walleye fishing. A good portion are being found in the deeper pockets of water in the river.
• The Upper Clarion River is offering up a variety of catches to fishermen who are trolling its waters, including channel catfish, walleye and smallmouth bass. The catfish catches are coming at night, but the walleye bite has been strong during the early-morning hours.
• Anglers are finding smallmouth bass in the shallower parts of the river around the Cooksburg area.
• Smallmouth bass and walleye are populating the Lower Clarion River. There doesn’t appear to be a specific hot spot as anglers are reporting success with both fish throughout the length of the river.
• In Westmoreland County, the Allegheny River is yielding plenty of muskellunge. Fishermen are reporting some rather large catches in the area where the Allegheny meets Buffalo Creek. According to reports, there are solid numbers around Lock and Dam 4 and 5 as well.
• At Neshannock Creek, fishermen are reeling in smallmouth bass in good numbers. One route for success is using tube jigs, per reports.
• Anglers at Lake Arthur are still doing well with hybrid striped bass, specifically in the shallower bay areas. White bombers and alewife are solid approaches for bait, as are nightcrawlers and minnors.
• The Allegheny River in Venango County is harboring smallmouth bass, muskie and northern pike. The muskie and northern pike are a little more difficult to find, but the bass catches are coming in at a solid rate. For the bass, tubes and soft plastics have been a good setup.
