For 3rd time in 7 days, Steelers make Sutton Smith/Darin Hall roster-move swap

Steelers linebacker Sutton Smith goes through drills during OTA work out May, 2019 at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

The former Xavier Grimble locker in an almost-hidden corner of the Pittsburgh Steelers locker room has consistently been home to a No. 42 over the past week. The man occupying it, though, has been revolving.

The Steelers re-signed linebacker Sutton Smith to their practice squad Tuesday, releasing running back Darrin Hall to make room. The move came five days after the team pulled the opposite – releasing Smith off the practice squad to sign Hall. The day prior to that, the Steelers had added Smith to their practice squad to fill a spot vacated, in part, by the release of Hall.

The versatile Smith was one of the Steelers’ sixth-round draft picks in April; a torn oblique muscle during training camp thwarted his chances of making the team. The consensus All-American and two-time Mid-American Conference defensive player of the year had 29 sacks his final two seasons.

It’s perhaps a longshot, but with both backup outside linebackers on the 53-man roster (Anthony Chickillo and Ola Adeniyi) battling injury in a short week, it’s possible Smith could be called upon before Thursday’s game at the Cleveland Browns.

Smith has taken practice reps at fullback, too, and the Steelers are likely again without fullback Roosevelt Nix against the Browns.

An undrafted rookie who had a 1,000-yard rushing season for Pitt, Hall spent part of training camp with the Green Bay Packers before signing with the Steelers two weeks ago.
