Former Penguins forward Beau Bennett retires

Former Penguins forward Beau Bennett announced his retirement from professional hockey on Friday.

He revealed his decision via a posting on Twitter.

Bennett, 29, cited injuries that often derailed his once promising career as the reason for stepping away.

“I think my tough luck was well documented but there probably longer list that no one will know,” Bennett wrote. “Injuries are a part of life and sometimes it is important to listen to your body so it is time for me to retire.”

A native of Gardena, Calif., Bennett was the Penguins’ first-round pick (No. 20 overall) in 2010. Debuting in 2012-13, Bennett spent six seasons in the NHL, four of which were spent with the Penguins. In 129 career games with the Penguins, Bennett had 45 points (16 goals, 29 assists) and was a member of the franchise’s Stanley Cup title team in 2016.

Bennett expressed gratitude for his time with the Penguins.

“Thank you to to the Pittsburgh Penguins for giving me a chance in the NHL, ” Bennett wrote. “Your city and fans accepted me and treated me like one of their own.”

Bennett also spent time with the New Jersey Devils and St. Louis Blues. After playing for the Tuscon Roadrunners, American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes, in 2019-20, Bennett did not play professionally during the 2020-21 season.
