Forward Dominik Simon spent parts of six seasons with the Penguins.

Former Penguins forward Dominik Simon has signed a two-year contract with HC Sparta Praha in his native Czechia.

The signing was announced by the team on Saturday with a release as well as a video presentation.

According to the team’s release, Simon indicated the Penguins offered him an opportunity to attend their upcoming training camp — presumably on a professional tryout (PTO) contract — but he opted to return to Czechia.

Simon, 28, appeared in 72 games between the Penguins and Anaheim Ducks last season and scored 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) while averaging 10:17 of ice time per contest.

The Penguins dealt Simon to the Ducks at the trade deadline on March 21 as part of a bundle of assets that brought forward Rickard Rakell to Pittsburgh.

Simon previously played for HC Sparta Praha as a professional, most recently during the 2012-13 season, and also played for that organization’s youth teams. HC Sparta Praha, which is based in Prague, competes in Czechia’s top league, commonly referred to as the Czech Extraliga

A fifth-round pick (No. 137 overall) of the Penguins in 2015, Simon spent parts of six seasons with the Penguins at the NHL level. In 228 career games with the Penguins, Simon had 73 points (22 goals, 51 assists).

Follow the Penguins all season long.
