Former Penguins forward Marc Johnstone signs with AHL's Toronto Marlies
Former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Marc Johnstone signed a two-year American Hockey League contract with the Toronto Marlies on Monday.
Johnstone, 29, spent the past two seasons with the Penguins under a two-way NHL contract that carried a salary cap hit of $775,000.
During that time, he appeared in one NHL game — his only career game in the league — with the Penguins. During a 3-1 road loss to the Florida Panthers on Dec. 8, 2023, Johnstone logged 7 minutes, 19 seconds of ice time on 10 shifts.
The right-hander spent the 2024-25 season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL. In 51 contests with that club, Johnstone (6-foot, 180 pounds) scored 11 points (five goals, six assists).
Following this transaction, five players who finished last season under contract with the Penguins remain unsigned, either with an NHL or AHL club or a squad in Europe:
Forwards — Emil Bemstrom, Mathias Laferriere, Matt Nieto
Defensemen — Matt Grzelcyk, Colton Poolman
