Former Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Shero was posthumously named the recipient of the Lester Patrick Trophy for this year.

The award recognizes “outstanding service to hockey in the United States.” The announcement of Shero’s selection was made by the United States Hockey Hall of Fame on on Friday.

Shero died April 9 following a bout with cancer. He was 62.

A native of Saint Paul, Minn., Shero served as general manager of the Penguins for eight seasons between 2006 and 2014. The pinnacle of his tenure with the club came in 2009 when the franchise won its third Stanley Cup title. Following the 2012-13 season, he won the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award.

Last month, Shero was selected for enshrinement in the Penguins’ relaunched team hall of fame in a future year.

Shero also served as general manager of the New Jersey Devils and served in various front office roles with the Ottawa Senators, Nashville Predators and Minnesota Wild. He was also an executive with USA Hockey during the 2014 Olympics and several other international tournaments.

His father, former NHL coach Fred Shero, was the recipient of the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1980.
