Former Penn State tight end Zack Kuntz warms up before a game.

Zack Kuntz is officially a former Penn State tight end.

The Camp Hill native and redshirt sophomore is transferring to Old Dominion, he announced on social media Sunday night.

Kuntz, who signed with the Lions back in the Class of 2018, was first stuck behind classmate and All-American Pat Freiermuth and then figured to be the odd man out in 2021 as Brenton Strange and Theo Johnson are the most likely first- and second-team options this fall now that Freiermuth is off to the NFL.

With the Monarchs, Kuntz will reunite with a number of familiar faces. ODU head coach Ricky Rahne was the Lions’ former tight ends coach and offensive coordinator, of course, and a number of ex-PSU people are on his staff there, including former Camp Hill quarterback Michael Shuster.

A 6-foot-7, 260-pound tight end, Kuntz caught just three passes for 26 yards in blue and white.

Old Dominion did not have a season a year ago due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Conference USA team opens its season on Sept. 3 at Wake Forest. It also plays Marshall later in the year, which will feature Rahne squaring off with another former Penn State assistant, Charles Huff, who is now the head coach of the Thundering Herd.

Most of the Penn State players who have entered the transfer portal since the 2020 season ended have now found a home, but guard CJ Thorpe is still searching for one. End Bradon Taylor is, as well.
