Former Pirates outfielder Jose Tabata leaves West Virginia for Mexican League
Former Pirates outfielder Jose Tabata has earned a promotion, but not to the major leagues.
The 32-year-old Tabata, who has been playing with the West Virginia Power of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, was signed by the Sultanes de Monterrey of the Mexican League.
Tabata, best known for being hit by a pitch to break up a perfect-game bid by Washington’s Max Scherzer with two outs in the ninth inning of a 2015 game, hit .350 with four home runs, six doubles, 17 RBIs and a 1.007 OPS in 28 games with the Power.
Since last appearing with the Pirates in 2015, Tabata has played for Triple-A Oklahoma City, two teams in the Atlantic League, two teams in Mexico and four teams in the Venezuelan Winter League.
Tabata was a .275 hitter in six seasons with the Pirates.
