Nine days after the Pittsburgh Steelers declined to tender an offer to restricted free agent wide receiver/returner Steven Sims, he signed a contract with the Houston Texans.

Sims, who turns 26 on March 31, is a Houston native.

Sims became an unrestricted free agent when the Steelers declined to tender him a $2.627 million offer when free agency began March 15. He moved into a role as the team’s slot receiver after Chase Claypool was traded in mid-season to the Chicago Bears.

Sims finished with 19 catches for 105 yards — all coming after Week 7 — and he returned 24 punts for a 5.5 average, and averaged 25.5 yards on kickoff returns. He was the most-used returner on the Steelers roster last season.

After spending his first two seasons with Washington, Sims joined the Steelers in 2021 and appeared in just one game that season.

With his departure, Gunner Olszewski is the top option on the roster to be the Steelers’ returner next season. He had eight punt and three kickoff returns last season, his first with the Steelers.
