Frostburg State knocks Cal (Pa.) out of NCAA Division II playoffs
Harrison Fritz capped a 15-play fourth-quarter drive with the go-ahead 20-yard field goal with 4:06 to play, giving Frostburg State a 23-21 victory over Cal (Pa.) in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs Saturday.
Harry Radcliffe missed a 45-yard field goal attempt with 1:38 to go for Cal (9-4).
Frostburg State (11-2) will meet PSAC champion Kutztown in the quarterfinals next Saturday.
The Vulcans took the lead twice in the first half with the Bobcats answering both times.
Da’sjon Craggette capped an 11-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown run for Cal late in the first quarter. Jordan Fritz hit Cruiz Paul-Umstead with a 7-yard scoring strike early in the second quarter to tie it.
Roman Purcell connected with D’Avay Johnson on a 34-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the first half to give the Vulcans another lead. Brooks hit Ray Adames on a 48-yard on the first series of the third quarter to forge another tie.
Frostburg State took a 20-14 lead when KJ Smothers scored on a 3-yard run to cap a 15-play, 98-yard drive late in the third quarter.
Cal answered with an eight-play drive ending with an 5-yard touchdown pass from Purcell to Johnson to take its last lead, 21-20, with 13:08 to go in the game.
For Frostburg State, Brooks was 20 of 25 passing for 240 yards and two touchdowns. Paul-Umstead caught seven passes for 63 yards and Adams made three grabs for 78 yards. Smothers ran 15 times for 78 yards and a score.
For Cal, Purcell was 15 of 28 passing for 196 yards and two touchdowns. Kendrick Agenor was the leading rusher with 121 yards on 16 carries. Kenny Lewis IV was the leading receiver with five catches for 74 yards.
