Wrestlers warm up Thursday, March 21, 2019, at PPG Paints Arena in preparation for the first day of the NCAA wrestling championships.

Steve Sprague watched his son, Michael, wrestle his final college match Friday in Pittsburgh.

About 30 minutes after the match ended, Steve Sprague suffered “a cardiac event” and died.

Now friends are trying to raise money for the grief-stricken family with a GoFundMe page.

Michael Sprague is a senior 149-pound wrestler at American University. He went 2-2 during the NCAA Division I Championships at PPG Paints Arena.

Proceeds will go to Steve’s children, Michael and Laura Sprague, and will help to cover funeral expenses.

The fundraiser had raised over $18,000 by late Monday.

Michael Sprague, of Olney, Md., finished with a career record of 85-61, including 25-11 this season.

His mother died nine years ago.
