Gateway grad Courtney Jackson finding success at Arkansas State

Courtney Jackson found the end zone for the first time this season in Arkansas State’s victory over Stony Brook on Sept. 16, 2023.

Courtney Jackson is playing his first season with the Arkansas State football team, and on Sept. 16, he hauled in his first touchdown pass for the Red Wolves in a 31-7 victory over Stony Brook.

Arkansas State collected 485 yards of total offense with the receiving corps gaining 140 of those yards. Jackson caught two passes in the game for 33 yards. Of those yards, 25 came on his TD catch early in the fourth quarter to make it 31-0.

Through three games, Jackson owns seven catches for 105 yards. He led off the season with three grabs for 66 yards, including a 47-yard reception, at Oklahoma on Sept. 2.

Jackson, a redshirt junior, transferred to Arkansas State after four seasons with Syracuse where he caught 63 passes for 662 yards.

He led the Orange in receptions in 2021 with 37 catches for 389 yards and earned a spot on the Pro Football Focus All-ACC team. The team’s primary return man for the last four weeks of that season, Jackson returned three punts for 110 total yards and a touchdown.

Brady Sundin

Gateway grad Brady Sundin, a sophomore on the Saint Vincent men’s cross country team, is back running for the Bearcats after a breakout freshman season where he captured Newcomer of the Year honors in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and placed ninth overall at the PAC Championships with a personal-best 8K time of 26 minutes, 37 seconds.

Sundin was Saint Vincent’s No. 2 runner at the Bethany College Invitational on Sept. 9. He took 13th overall out of a field of 190 runners who completed the race.

He was a part of a Bearcats quartet which earned place finishes in the top 25 and led the team to a runner-up finish out of 20 teams.

Sundin also took 20th out of 106 runners at the season-opening Father Bede Invitational 6K, hosted by St. Francis University, on Sept. 1. He was the third Saint Vincent finisher (20:20.9) and helped the Bearcats take third in the team standings behind Division I Duquesne and Division II IUP.

Maddy Neundorfer

Maddy Neundorfer, a Gateway grad and the starting goalkeeper for the Duquesne women’s soccer team, was 3-5-2 through the Dukes’ first 10 games this season.

Neundorfer, a junior, made a season-best eight saves in back-to-back games against Davidson and Loyola Chicago on Sept. 14 and Sept. 17, respectively.

Those efforts helped the Dukes tie Davidson, 1-1, and play to a scoreless tie with Loyola.

She helped author three other shutouts — a 5-0 victory over American on Aug. 20, a 2-0 triumph over St. Francis (Pa.) on Sept. 3, and a 1-0 win over Farleigh Dickinson on Sept. 7.

Neundorfer owned 142 saves through 26 career games as a starter with Duquesne through the match with Loyola.

Jayson Jenkins

Gateway graduate Jayson Jenkins, a Robert Morris junior kicker, accounted for seven points in a 31-21 victory over St. Franics (Pa.) on Sept. 16.

It was the Colonials’ first victory of the season.

Jenkins got RMU on the board in the first quarter by capping off a 14-play, 47-yard drive with a 33-yard field goal. It was his first field-goal attempt of the season.

He then punctuated four other TD drives with extra points. He was 9 for 9 on extra points over the first three games.

Emily Mannion

Emily Mannion, a Gateway 2023 graduate and freshman midfielder for the Clarion women’s soccer team, played in the Golden Eagles’ first four games and made two starts.

She played the full 90 minutes in a season-opening draw at Ursuline on Aug. 31 and also got the start at home against Roberts Wesleyan two days later.

She came off the bench in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games against Edinboro and Clarion.

Matt Brooks

Matt Brooks, a Gateway graduate and 6-foot-1, 280-pound freshman defensive lineman for the Duquesne football team, registered his first collegiate tackle in a reserve role in the Dukes’ loss at West Virginia on Sept. 9.

He also posted a tackle in Duquesne’s game at Coastal Carolina on Sept. 16.

The Dukes hoped to even their record on Saturday as they traveled to Long Island University for their Northeast Conference opener.

Derrick Davis

Derrick Davis, a Gateway graduate, joined the Pitt football team in January as a mid-year transfer from Louisiana State University with redshirt sophomore eligibility.

He owns two appearances with the Panthers, gaining 8 yards on two rushes in Pitt’s season-opening victory over Wofford.

Davis also saw action in the Panthers’ 27-21 loss to Cincinnati on Sept. 9.

He played in 17 games over two seasons at LSU. He started 2022 as a safety but moved to running back late in the season when LSU’s backfield was beset by injuries.

He finished his time with the Tigers by rushing for 29 yards and a touchdown on six carries in a Citrus Bowl victory over Purdue.

Teddy Almeter

Teddy Almeter, a Monroeville resident and Serra Catholic graduate, is the starting sophomore goalkeeper for the Grove City men’s soccer team. He earned his first collegiate victory in a 4-2 Presidents’ Athletic Conference win over Chatham on Sept. 20.

He stopped three shots in the win.

Almeter played all 90 minutes in each of Grove City’s first seven games. He helped the Wolverines defense register shutouts against Oberlin and Penn State-Behrend.

He made a season-best four saves in Grove City’s 1-1 tie against Buffalo State on Sept. 16.

The Wolverines were 1-2-4 overall heading into a PAC matchup with Franciscan on Sept. 23.
