Daniel Obremski of Irwin watches his tee shot on Hole 18 during the U.S. Open local qualifier Thursday, May 12, 2016, at Butler Country Club.

It looks like it’s going to be a tight race at the 116th annual Western Pennsylvania Golf Association’s Open Championship.

There are 24 golfers who shot even-par or lower in the first round Tuesday at Valley Brook Country Club in McMurray.

Oakmont Country Club head professional Devin Gee and PGA Latinoamerica Tour player Dan Obremski of Irwin share the first-round lead after shooting 4-under-par 68.

A shot back at 3-under are Indiana’s Matt Holuta, Penn State golf coach T.J. Howe, Peters Township’s Alec Stopperich, Butler’s Rob McClellan and Pittsburgh’s Beau Titsworth. McClellan won the Pittsburgh Open on July 2.

Two shots back at 2-under are Bethel Park’s Brett Young, Latrobe’s Brady Pevarnik, Moon’s Ian Bangor and Bethel Park’s Darin Kowalski.

Gee strung together four consecutive birdies (Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 7) on the front nine and finished with a 31. Obremski had six birdies — five on the front — and two bogeys, en route to a 31 on the front nine.

Round 2 is Wednesday, and the final round is Thursday.

James Gillam of Hollidaysburg is the returning champion. He withdrew and is not defending his title. He edged 2019 West Penn Amateur champion Connor Schmidt in a playoff.
