With the Pittsburgh Steelers in the market for depth at outside linebacker, they visited with Georgia’s Robert Beal Jr. on Tuesday at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

Beal is a 6-foot-4, 247-pound edge rusher who started a combined 10 games over the past two seasons for Georgia. He is the 19th official pre-draft visitor hosted by the Steelers. Each NFL team is allotted 30 such visits.

Beal attended Peachtree Ridge High school in Suwanee, Ga., the same school that produced Steelers players Cameron and Connor Heyward.

ESPN rated Beal as a five-star prospect and No. 2 defensive end in the nation when he enrolled at Georgia for the 2018 season. But he had to wait his turn to get on the field for the Bulldogs. It wasn’t until 2021 that he made his first two career starts. He appeared in all 15 games that season and led Georgia with 6.5 sacks en route to the school’s national championship.

Beal started eight games last season and totaled 26 tackles and 20 quarterback pressures. In 54 career games, he had 10.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss and 72 tackles.

Beal impressed at the NFL Combine in March when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds, the third-fastest recorded time among edge rushers.

Wrote NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein in his breakdown of Beal’s strengths: “Walks off the bus looking like an NFL 3-4 outside ‘backer.”

Pro Football Network rated Beal as the No. 12 outside linebacker in this year’s class.

The Steelers, of course, are looking to add depth to the position in their defense behind starters T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. Malik Reed, who served as a veteran backup last season, signed with Miami in free agency.
