An impressive showing at the U.S. Amateur has Mark Goetz in position to win a prestigious award.

Goetz, a Greensburg native, Hannastown Golf Club member and fifth-year senior at West Virginia, is one of three finalists for the Ben Hogan Award August Golfer of the Month.

He joins U.S. Amateur champion James Piot of Michigan State and Washington State’s Max Sekulic on the ballot.

The overall Ben Hogan Award winner is selected by a multi-tiered vote by the Hogan Trophy Award Foundation and Friends of Golf committees, and an online vote via Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

The winner of the monthly award will be announced Friday.

The overall Hogan award, given to the top collegiate golfer in the country, is announced in June.

Goetz was the medalist at the U.S. Amateur, played last month at Longue Vue Club and Oakmont Country Club. He finished the 36-hole stroke-play tournament at 8-under-par 132, including a 64 at Longue Vue, to earn the top seed in match play. He outplayed 311 other golfers for the honor.

Piot, a senior who is from Canton, Mich., held off Austin Greaser of North Carolina, 2 and 1, to take the U.S. Amateur title at Oakmont.

Sekulic, also senior, won the Canadian Amateur and the Northwest Open Invitational. He is a native of Rycroft, Alberta.
