Pete Antimarino Jr. presents recent Gateway graduate Jacques “JT” Taylor with this year’s Antimarino Leadership Award and scholarship at the annual Walter “Pete” Antimarino Sr. Golf Outing on July 23, 2021, at Meadowink Golf Course in Murrysville. The award and scholarship honors the legendary Pitcairn and Gateway head football coach who served the districts for a combined 37 years.

Sunny and warm weather conditions greeted more than 100 golfers July 23 at Meadowink Golf Course in Murrysville for the fourth annual Walter “Pete” Antimarino Golf Outing.

The day of activities serves to honor the memory of the legendary Pitcairn and Gateway football coach and is an opportunity for Gateway football alumni, Antimarino’s coaching colleagues and other supporters of Gateway football to gather in fellowship.

“My dad, I am sure, was looking down and smiling at everyone having a good time,” Pete Antimarino Jr. said.

“It is always great to see that Gateway camaraderie.”

Seven decades of Gateway football alumni were represented, and attendees came in from Texas, Michigan, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and New Jersey.

Antimarino Sr., who coached at Pitcairn for six years followed by 31 at Gateway, died in May 2017. He was 91.

“This is becoming sort of an annual Gateway football and Gateway sports reunion,” said Tony Petrocelli, chairman of the Gateway Sports Hall of Fame who played football under Antimarino and graduated in 1974.

“It’s great because I get a chance to see teammates of mine from the early 1970s who I may only see once a year.”

The event, which included 18 holes of golf and several sponsorship opportunities, also raises money for the Pete Antimarino Scholarship Fund and presents a scholarship each year — the Pete Antimarino Leadership Award — to a Gateway senior who best demonstrates leadership on the field, off the field, in the classroom and throughout the community.

Gateway standout Jacques “JT” Taylor, a captain for both his junior and senior seasons with the Gators and a Notre Dame College (Ohio) commit, was presented this year’s scholarship worth $4,000.

On hand to congratulate Taylor were 2018 scholarship winner Brady Walker, 2019 winner Ethan Frenchik, and Justin Stancovich, the brother of 2020 honoree Jordan Stancovich.

The past of Gateway football continues to unite with its present, and current Gateway football coach Don Holl offered words honoring the tradition of the program.

“Coach Holl spoke of that winning tradition at Gateway and how they use that to motivate them before every game,” Antimarino Jr. said.

“He has a saying where he wants his teams to ‘Defend Antimarino.’ That’s not just about defending the stadium (Antimarino Stadium) but also defending all the players who played for my dad and the other coaches and players who came after and also the history of the program.”
