Once a slick-fielding shortstop with power at the plate, Warren Schaeffer continues to pass down his baseball knowledge to aspiring minor-leaguers — perhaps while climbing a different ladder to the big leagues.

The former Greensburg Central Catholic star has been named manager of the Albuquerque Isotopes, the Class-AAA affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.

Albuquerque plays in the Pacific Coast League.

Schaeffer, 34, has spent seven seasons in the Rockies’ organization, most recently as the manager of the Class-AA Hartford Yard Goats for two years.

The Vandergrift native also managed the Class-A Asheville Tourists from 2015-17 and guided the team to the South Atlantic League Championship Series.

He is 344-347 in five seasons in the minors.

A former minor-leaguer himself, Schaeffer played six seasons, all with Colorado, who drafted him in the 38th round in 2007, before retiring at 28.

He reached Class-AAA briefly but did not play at that level.

The Virginia Tech graduate who helped lead GCC to a PIAA Class A title in 2002, began his coaching career in 2013 as a hitting instructor with Tri-City Dust Devils of the short-season Northwest League.

Schaeffer and his wife, Callie, and their two children, Beauman and Emerson, live in Asheville, N.C.
