Greensburg Salem grad Paul Matthews joins Ave Maria coaching staff
Greensburg Salem graduate Paul Matthews has joined the Ave Maria University men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach.
Ave Maria is located in Florida.
“I am ecstatic to join the Ave Maria community and Coach Copeland’s staff,” Matthews said in a release. “I believe that Ave Maria is an incredible place for a student-athlete to accomplish all their personal and spiritual goals.
“Through competition and academia, I will do my best to help mold these young men into great ambassadors of the university. I look forward to working with the staff to build a nationally recognized program.”
Matthews is a 2011 graduate of Washington & Jefferson College after graduating from Greensburg Salem in 2007.
He has coached at NCAA Division II level at Seton Hill University, Gannon University and Christian Brothers University.
He was an assistant basketball coach for John Reilly at Christian Brothers University in the Gulf South Conference and Gannon in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Matthews began his career at Seton Hill as an assistant coach and became an associate head coach with Tony Morocco.
He also has coached at numerous summer basketball camps, including the Hoop Group Elite Camps and the Shanghai Basketball Association.
His grandfather, the late Bernie Matthews, is a member of the Pennsylvania Basketball Hall of Fame, the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Hall of Fame and is the all-time winningest men’s basketball coach at Saint Vincent College where he coached for 33 years.
