Greensburg native Asa Klimchock leads Bethany in scoring and minutes.

After four schools in six seasons, Greensburg native Asa Klimchock has found a home with the Bethany (W.Va.) basketball program.

And that new home includes a new position this winter.

Klimchock moved from point guard — where he played his “whole life” — to shooting guard, and he is thriving in the role. The 6-foot-1 junior leads the team with 13.7 points per game to go with 4.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

“I never thought I would say I didn’t like being the point guard, but honestly, I love being a two,” Klimchock said. “Being on the wing and being able to create rather than being in the middle of the court makes a huge difference with getting the shots I want. It gives me a lot more open space to work.”

“It’s weird because I’ll still get in trouble in film (sessions) because guys get a rebound, and I’ll stick behind trying to get a rebound and then I’ll remember I’m not the (point guard) anymore so I’ll sprint down the floor. It was definitely a big change.”

Klimchock spent his first two high school years at Greensburg Central Catholic before attending the Kiski School as a junior and senior. He then spent his first collegiate season at Clarion and transferred to Bethany in 2020.

In his first season at Bethany, Klimchock started all 10 games and averaged 9.3 points and 2.0 assists. However, he shot 26.5% on 3-pointers. That wasn’t going to work with his new position. So he spent the offseason focusing on more advanced shooting drills — not just standstill 3s — and the results are evident. He is up to 34.2% on 3s this season, which complements the strongest part of his game: his drives to the basket.

“His shot always looked good to me last year,” Bethany coach Mike Worrell said. “I thought there was no reason he couldn’t shoot a higher percentage from 3, and he’s done that. I think he can get even better as he goes along.”

Klimchock’s improvements are more impressive considering he tore the meniscus in his left knee late in Bethany’s final game last season. He needed surgery but was back in time for practice in the fall.

“It’s feeling great,” Klimchock said.

The personal success hasn’t translated into wins yet, though. The Bison are 2-13 overall and 2-8 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Perhaps the most excruciating loss for Klimchock came Wednesday, a 67-62 setback at Saint Vincent despite 17 points and seven assists. About 20 family members were in attendance.

“It was horrible,” Klimchock with a laugh. “That’s the one game, even last year, I said I don’t care what we do, we have to beat Saint Vincent. I said the same thing (Wednesday), we can’t lose in this gym. And we ended up losing in a tough one.”

It’s not just a geographical thing, either. Three cousins — Chris and Ben Klimchock, along with and Dan Sinwell — played at Saint Vincent and won conference titles.

So when asked what he wants to accomplish at Bethany, there was no hesitation.

“Win a PAC championship,” Asa Klimchock said. “I’ve seen it too many times in my family, and I need one now.”
