West Virginia fifth-year senior golfer Mark Goetz captured his second consecutive Mountaineer Invitational by shooting a career-low 63 during the final day at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W.Va.
Goetz also won the tournament in 2020. The Kiski School graduate and Greensburg native is a member of Hannastown Golf Club in Greensburg.
His 9-under par was the lowest round in school history in relation to par. Logan Perkins shot a school-record 8-under par 62 in 2020.
His three-day total of 14-under par 202 was the lowest three-round total in school history. He had 19 birdies and just five bogeys during the 54-hole event. It was his second win of his collegiate career.
“Mark was pretty impressive,” WVU coach Sean Covich said. “It has been impressive to watch what he has done the last two seasons for us and his development from his freshman season to now.
“Mark means a lot to our team, but the team means a lot to Mark. He wants the team to do well, he’s a leader, he’s a coach, and I couldn’t be happier for him.”
WVU tied the school record for 18 holes with a final round score of 13-under par. The Mountaineers finished second with an 8-under par 856, a shot behind No. 8 North Carolina State’s 855.
Goetz had a big summer and was the medalist at the United States Golf Association’s Amateur at Oakmont Country Club and the Longue Vue Club.
