Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger looks on as he enjoys the day off from during practice Monday, Aug. 24, 2020 at Heinz Field.

For the first time since the Pittsburgh Steelers put on the pads a week ago, they had their All-Pro right guard on the practice field.

David DeCastro practiced Monday after missing the previous five sessions with an undisclosed injury. His return came on a day when right tackle Chuks Okorafor (groin) and center Maurkice Pouncey (personal) were absent from the first-team offensive line.

DeCastro participated in individual and team portions, but he sat out the last practice period.

Given a day off were quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. Missing practice because of injury were wide receiver Diontae Johnson (calf), running back Wendell Smallwood (shoulder), safety Terrell Edmunds (undisclosed), guard Kevin Dotson (knee) and defensive end Chris Wormley (shoulder).

New injuries included outside linebacker Bud Dupree (hand), who did individual work but not team portions; offensive lineman Derwin Gray (knee) and wide receiver Anthony Johnson (knee).

Returning to practice were long snapper Kameron Canaday (knee), linebacker Rob Spillane (finger), defensive end Stephon Tuitt (no injury) and running back James Conner (no injury).

Because of the injuries and absences, Tomlin estimated the Steelers finished practice with 65 players.

“It provides opportunities for others,” he said. “That’s what we focus on. Younger guys get to ascend within competition and compete against veteran players and show their mettle in that regard.”

Tomlin offered glowing reports on his two top draft picks: wide receiver Chase Claypool and outside linebacker Alex Highsmith. They each got extended playing time with injuries at their respective positions.

“They are proving that they belong,” Tomlin said.

Tomlin said this second week of practice is an important one for players on the bubble who don’t have the benefit of preseason games to impress the coaching staff.

“If guys are going to make a move, now is the time,” Tomlin said. “They’ve gotten acclimated to the environment, how we go about our business. It’s time for the talent to show.”
