Hempfield grad Jasmine Jones off to record start at Olympics for U.S. bobsled

Jasmine Jones is off to a fast start at the Olympics.

A record start, in fact.

The Hempfield graduate and Jeannette native and her teammate, Kaillie Armbruster Humphries, were the second team on the track Friday and are in first place after the first heat of the two-woman bobsled in Milano Cortina.

Jones, the brakeman and former Eastern Michigan sprinter, and pilot Humphries, both moms, registered a track record in their first run with a time of 56.92 seconds.

Three German teams follow in the early standings.

There are two heats Friday and two Saturday. The cumulative four-heat time makes up the final score.

The top 20 teams advance to Saturday’s medal run.

Humphries has won three Olympic gold medals competing for Canada.

Two other U.S. teams were in fifth and sixth place.
