Hempfield grad Maddie Holmberg sets season high, wins pentathlon in New York

Penn State’s Maddie Holmberg, a Hempfield grad, won the pentathlon at the Dr. Sander Invitational in New York City.

Hempfield grad Maddie Holmberg continues to do amazing things on the track.

A Penn State senior and two-time first-team NCAA All-American turned in her best performance of the season, scoring 4,171 points in winning the pentathlon at the Dr. Sander Invitational in New York City.

Competing in five events, the Nittany Lions senior captain won three — the 60-meter hurdles, shot put and long jump. She tied for third in the high jump and third in the 800.

She ran an 8.64 in the 60-meter hurdles to earn 987 points. In her second event, she jumped 5 feet, 3.25 inches in the high jump (747 points).

Her second victory came in the shot put with a toss of 43-3.25 (740). She followed by leaping 19-10.25 in winning the long jump (865). In her final event, she ran 2 minutes, 19.37 seconds in the 800 (832).

She finished seventh in 2018 to earn her first All-American honor at the indoor championships and she finished third in the outdoor championships in the heptathlon. She earned second-team All-American honors at the 2019 indoor championships.

In high school, Holmberg helped Hempfield capture WPIAL and PIAA Class AAA titles. She competed in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and long jump and was part of the relay teams.
