Lake Placid, N.Y., is where Jasmine Jones calls home these days since she trains there with the Air Force World Class Athlete program.
On Saturday night in Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy, Jones became an Olympic bronze medalist alongside her friend and teammate, Kaillie Armbruster Humphries, in the two-woman bobsled competition.
The win carried some history for Jones. She aimed high.
The Jeannette native and Hempfield graduate became the first airman from the elite Air Force program to win a medal at the Winter Olympics. The program began in 1995.
The program helped Jones with financial stability and advanced her goal of having a career in the military.
“This is my way of paying back everything that they allow me to train, allow me to be here as well, and I couldn’t do it without them,” Jones told Stripes.com. “I’m thankful to represent both (the Air Force and USA Bobsled).”
Jones, 29, a former standout sprinter at Eastern Michigan, was inspired by Armbruster Humphries, 40, who won her sixth Olympic medal, the first as an American. She formerly competed for Canada.
“Not only is this my sixth medal, but to do it with someone who is just unbelievable like Jasmine and has also gone through it, it’s super cool,” Armbruster Humphries said.
The U.S. pair secured their spot on the podium with a final-heat run of 57.48 seconds, which allowed them to finish third behind two teams from Germany.
“It just goes to show that I trust everything she does and she trusts me and just made it happen,” Jones said. “I have so much faith in her because of what she has accomplished.
“I have never been a (bobsled) pilot; it’s not for me. But I know Kaillie has been a brakeman. She has done so much in the sport. I am very fortunate to have her as a teammate.”
Jones wanted to pump the brakes and enjoy her first Olympics experience before looking ahead to 2030 in the Alps in France.
“This experience has been incredible,” Jones said. “It’s definitely something to think about.”
