Hockey Hall of Fame's 2020 class to be inducted in 2021
The Hockey Hall of Fame’s class of 2020 will be inducted during the hall’s induction weekend Nov. 12-15, 2021. The coronavirus pandemic forced the postponement.
The 2020 class, selected in June, includes former Pittsburgh Penguins forwards Marian Hossa and Jarome Iginla.
As a result of the postponement, there will not be a class selected for 2021.
“The magic of the induction weekend from the perspective of the new inductees is participating in several days of close interaction with family, friends, former teammates, fellow legends and fans,” Chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame Lanny McDonald said in a statement. “On that premise, the (board of directors) felt that this was the right decision to bestow upon the class of 2020 the recognition and lifetime experience they so richly deserve in all ways consistent with past induction classes.”
Hossa and Iginla were members of the Penguins for brief stretches. Both were acquired at trade deadlines as “rental” players and were gone by the ensuing offseason.
At the 2008 trade deadline, Hossa was acquired from the Atlanta Thrashers. Because of an injury, he was limited to 12 regular-season games and 10 points (three goals, seven assists). In the postseason, Hossa appeared in 20 games and scored 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists) and helped the Penguins reach the Stanley Cup Final.
Iginla arrived in Pittsburgh before the 2013 trade deadline in a deal with the Calgary Flames. In 13 regular-season games, he scored 11 points (five goals, six assists). During that postseason, Iginla played in 15 games and collected 12 points (four goals, eight assists).
Their class will include longtime NHL general manager Ken Holland, former NHL defensemen Kevin Lowe and Doug Wilson as well as Kim St.-Pierre, a former star goaltender for the Canadian women’s national team.
