Identity of final 3 Steelers’ 2022 scheduled opponents to be decided Sunday

Pittsburgh Steelers fans: Would you rather your team play the Indianapolis Colts or the Houston Texans next season? Which road trip sounds more appealing — Philadelphia or Washington?

The determinations will be made by how the Steelers fare on Sunday.

The annual opponents for NFL team’s schedules are predetermined ahead of time for 14 of 17 games; the other three are based on placing within the division standings. For 2022, the Steelers’ three yet-to-be-known games are to be against opponents from the AFC South, AFC West and NFC East.

Sunday’s Steelers game at the Baltimore Ravens will determine which teams finishes in second place and which team in third in the AFC North. The Steelers will play at a team from the NFC East and AFC South and host a team from the AFC West — each corresponding to their place in the standings with where the Steelers end up.

If the Steelers win Sunday, the two 2022 season road games are certainties: they’ll be at Indianapolis and the Philadelphia Eagles. The mystery home game would then be against the winner of Sunday night’s Los Angeles Chargers/Las Vegas Raiders game.

Should the Steelers lose to the Ravens, they’d host Sunday’s Chargers/Raiders loser next fall, and they’d have road games at the Texans and Washington Football Team.

In addition to the annual home-and-home meetings with their AFC North rivals, the Steelers in 2022 will play each of the teams in the AFC East and NFC South.
