Irwin's Obremski shoots 62, leads West Penn Open
Dan Obremski played almost perfect golf Tuesday during the first round of the 117th annual West Penn Open at Shannopin Country Club.
The Irwin native and Penn-Trafford grad had 10 birdies and one bogey to finish with a 9-under par 62 and holds a two-shot lead on Greensburg native and West Virginia University senior Mark Goetz, who shot a 7-under par 64.
Goetz had eight birdies and one bogey.
The last time Obremski was home, he placed second at the Frank. B. Fuhrer Jr. Invitational in late June.
“It was a good day,” Obremski said. “I putted really well. I had two birdie putts under 12 feet.
“I made the putts I needed to make. I definitely will have to play well if I want to win it.”
Obremski is home for three weeks. He will also play in the Pennsylvania Open on Monday at Oakmont Country Club.
Wexford’s Mike Van Sickle, Pittsburgh’s Beau Titsworth and Washington’s John Popeck are tied for third at 5-under. Peters Township’s Jake Sollon and Belle Vernon’s Michael Lubrani were tied for sixth at 4-under.
The final round of the tournament is Wednesday.
WPGA also announced a date for the West Penn Amateur. That event, which was postponed in early July, is now Aug. 24-25 at Allegheny Country Club.
State Senior Amateur shortened
Hurricane Isaias, which brought high winds and heavy rain to eastern Pa., forced the cancellation of the final round of the Pennsylvania Golf Association’s Senior Amateur on Tuesday at Stonewall North Golf Course in Elverson.
Indiana Country Club’s Lee Lykens was the Super Senior winner after shooting a 4-under par 66 on Monday.
Hannastown Golf Club members Vince Zachetti and Bob Allshouse placed second after shooting a 1-over 71.
Sewickley Height’s Paul Schlachter tied for seventh after shooting a 3-over 74.
The Senior Amateur winner was Philadelphia’s Chris Fieger Sr., who shot a 2-under 68.
Oakmont native and Hannastown member Sean Knapp was second after shooting an even-par 70 and St. Clair Country’s Dave Brown was third after shooting a 1-over 71.
Three tied for AJGA Southpointe lead
Bach Ngo, Anthony Delisanti and Shane Lawler shared the first-round lead at the AJGA Southpointe tournament sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods. The trio each fired a 2-over par 74 at the Southpointe Golf Club near Canonsburg.
Pittsburgh’s Adam Lauer, Murrysville’s Michael Wareham and Canonsburg’s Rocco Salvitti are tied for eighth after shooting a 77.
Hailey Schalk leads the girls division after shooting a 2-under par 70. Ellen Dong was second with a 72 and Ashley Liu was third with a 73.
Pittsburgh’s Tara Loughran was tied for eighth after shooting a 4-over 76.
The second round of the tournament is Wednesday and the final round of the 54-hole event is Thursday.
