IUP men's and women's basketball teams solidify national rankings

The Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s men’s and women’s basketball teams remain in the top 10 of their respective national Division II polls released Tuesday afternoon.

The Crimson Hawks men, coming off Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference victories over Mercyhurst, Slippery Rock and Gannon, moved up two spots to No. 7 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches poll.

IUP, now 13-1 overall, is one of two PSAC schools in the top 25. West Chester (14-1) suffered its first loss of the season with a 79-70 setback to Shippensburg on Jan. 8, and the Golden Rams fell four spots to No. 12.

Pitt-Johnstown (14-2) and Shippensburg (12-3) are receiving votes in this week’s rankings.

The IUP women are No. 8 in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association poll for the second week in a row.

The Crimson Hawks improved to 14-1 with three victories last week, extended their winning streak to 12 games. They produced PSAC wins over Mercyhurst, Slippery Rock and Gannon to up its conference mark to 9-0.

IUP’s 404 points in this week’s voting placed it just one point behind No. 7 Alaska Anchorage (16-1).

The Cal U women (12-3) slipped five spots to No. 20 after Saturday’s 73-72 loss to Edinboro. The Vulcans had won three in a row to start 2020.
