IUP dipped into the NCAA Division I ranks to hire its new women’s volleyball coach.

Julie Torbett, who played high school volleyball at Eisenhower (1986) in Warren County and is a 1990 graduate of Penn State, was named the eighth head coach in the history of the program. Torbett previously coached at East Carolina in the American Athletic Conference where she led the Pirates to 109 victories in seven seasons (2013-19).

She also coached at Winthrop (2011-12) and North Carolina-Asheville (1994-2010). She was Big South Coach of the Year in 2002 and ‘09.

Torbett has 447 career victories, 41st among active Division I coaches, with 304 coming at UNC-Asheville.

Torbett played middle back and defensive specialist at Penn State and earned a degree in exercise and sport science in 1990.
