Golf notebook: Palmer Jackson working on game; 4 qualify for state Open
Palmer Jackson continued to work out the kinks in his golf game during the third round of the 114th annual Southern Amateur on Friday.
The Murrysville native and Notre Dame sophomore shot a 3-over par 75 and is 8-over 224 for the tournament.
The final round is set for Saturday at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrolton, Texas.
Cole Hammer of Houston leads the prestigious event with a 7-under par 209. He shot a 4-under 68 on Friday. Pierceson Coody of Plano, Texas is a shot back at 6-under 210.
Jackson, who will compete in the Sunnehanna Amateur beginning on Tuesday, had two birdies, three bogies and a double bogey during his round.
He is currently tied for 58th.
Pa. Open qualifier
The Pennsylvania Golf Association held a qualifier for the state Open at Oakmont Country Club beginning Aug. 10 at Indiana Country Club on Wednesday.
Four golfers — amateur Kevin Koerbel, pro Dan Obremski, amateur Mike Wolfe and amateur Larry Lis — earned spots.
Koerbel of Pittsburgh was the medalist with a 3-under 68, while Obremski of Irwin, Wolfe of Erie and Lis of Avella tied for second with a 2-under 69.
The Pittsburgh Open winner, amateur Darin Kowalski of Bethel Park, shot a 1-under 70 and missed the cut.
