Tight end Brenton Strange, who was a favorite end zone target of Penn State quarterbacks over the past four seasons, was chosen by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday night in the second round of the NFL Draft. He was the 61st player chosen overall.

Strange was the sixth tight end selected in the first two rounds of the draft, five in Round 2.

He could become an instant threat in the Jaguars passing game after running a 4.7-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine — the same as Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer, who was chosen 35th by the Las Vegas Raiders, the fourth pick in the second round.

Strange (6-foot-3, 247 pounds) was a consistent threat for Penn State throughout his career.

As a freshman in his first collegiate game, he caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Will Levis in the 2019 opener against Idaho. It was his first of Strange’s 11 career touchdown receptions.

The following season, he caught 17 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns, followed by a 20/225/3 effort in 2021 when he was named honorable mention All-Big Ten.

Last season, he totaled 32 receptions for 362 yards and five touchdowns on his way to third-team All-Big Ten honors.
