The Pittsburgh Penguins planned to hand out thousands of Jaromir Jagr bobbleheads to fans at Thursday night’s game against the San Jose Sharks at PPG Paints Arena.

But those plans were altered suddenly when the Penguins were informed the shipment carrying the bobbleheads was stolen when it arrived in California.

In a news release, the Penguins said they learned they were victims of cargo theft after failing to receive the shipment as scheduled.

The Penguins announced Thursday morning that all fans in attendance will receive a voucher to redeem for the bobblehead at a later date.

Penguins officials said they are communicating with the manufacturer and transportation companies to alert state and federal authorities who are working to locate the cargo.

Team officials said it is an open investigation and no further comment would be made.

“We were shocked to be a victim of cargo theft, and we are working closely with local and federal authorities on the investigation,” Penguins president of business operations Kevin Acklin said in a statement. “While this unfortunate incident adds to the legend of Jaromir Jagr, who will be in attendance as our guest at tonight’s game, we look forward to resolving this theft and delivering the prized Jagr bobbleheads to their rightful homes, with our fans.”

Location and dates for pickup of the bobbleheads will be announced when the items are safely located or new bobbleheads are produced and available for distribution. Only fans in attendance for Thursday’s game are eligible to receive the voucher.

The Penguins retired Jagr’s No. 68 during a pregame ceremony Feb. 18. The team’s No. 5 overall draft pick in 1990, Jagr spent 11 seasons in Pittsburgh before the Penguins traded him to Washington in 2001. Jagr, 52, who played for nine teams during his 24 NHL seasons and is the NHL’s second all-time leading scorer with 1,921 points (766 goals, 1,155 assists), remains an active player with the team he owns in the Czech Republic.
