Jeannette grad Lamont Robinson, McKeesport's Swin Cash up for Basketball Hall of Fame
LaMont “Showboat” Robinson and Swin Cash already cemented their places in Western Pennsylvania basketball history with their contributions to the game at multiple levels.
Now both are hoping to see their names alongside some of the game’s greats.
Robinson and Cash are on the ballot for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2021.
A Jeannette graduate, Robinson is a three-time Hall of Fame nominee.
He was a fixture on the comedy hoops circuit with the Harlem Globetrotters, Harlem Roadkings and Harlem Clowns, joining those teams for barnstorming tours around the country for 28 years.
Cash, of McKeesport and Connecticut fame, played 17 seasons in the WNBA. She also was nominated last year.
Robinson, who was inducted into the American Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2019, is the son of Delores and Clarence “Pumpkin” Robinson, of Jeannette. His grandfather was John Henry Cowell, known as “ShowBoat” when he played running back at Jeannette in the early 1940s.
Robinson once roomed with Globetrotters legend Meadowlark Lemon.
Cash won three WNBA titles, a pair of NCAA championships at UConn and two Olympic gold medals. She blazed a trail into the NBA and currently is vice president of basketball operations and team development for the New Orleans Pelicans.
Last February, she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
Hall finalists will be announced during NBA All-Star Weekend in March and the NCAA Final Four in April.
The enshrinement ceremony will be in September in Springfield, Mass. The Hall of Fame Class of 2020 ceremony was postponed because of the covid-19 pandemic and was rescheduled for May 13-15, 2021.
