FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis announced Wednesday he is stepping away from football.

The 28-year-old was entering his third season with the Jets after beginning his career with the Tennessee Titans as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2017 draft.

“I’ve been searching my heart for what to do,” Davis wrote in his announcement on his Instagram page. “And I feel that stepping away from the game is the best path for me at this time.”

Davis did not use the word “retirement” in his statement, but he said he looks forward to spending more time with his family.

Davis had missed the last week of training camp practices because the wide receiver was “dealing with a personal matter,” coach Robert Saleh said Tuesday. But Saleh said he hoped Davis would be back with the team “soon.”

The timing of Davis’ decision is surprising because he was projected to be part of a receiving corps for Aaron Rodgers that includes Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman and Randall Cobb.
