If Joe Haden has his way, his fifth season with the Pittsburgh Steelers won’t be his last.
Drew Rosenhaus, Haden’s agent, confirmed to the Tribune-Review he has approached the organization about signing his client to a contract extension.
Haden, 32, is entering the final season of his deal that is paying him $7 million this season and counts $15.575 million against the salary cap, the second-highest allocation on the roster.
Haden started 14 games last year and had two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. In 2019, Haden intercepted five passes and made the Pro Bowl for the third time in his 11-year career.
“I would rather have a contract (for) more than this year because I want to end my career here,” Haden told The Athletic earlier this week. “We will see what happens, but we want to get T.J. Watt signed, obviously. He’s the main priority.”
The Steelers cut off negotiations once the regular season begins, so they have about a month to sign Haden to an extension — if that is the organization’s intent.
Cam Sutton is getting a chance to start at right cornerback for the first time in his five seasons. Haden is entrenched on the left, and the Steelers have young players short on NFL experience — James Pierre and Justin Layne — as backups outside.
