Steelers receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster signs his cleats for a fan before a game against the Bills Sunday, Dec. 15, 2019, at Heinz Field.

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin suggested JuJu Smith-Schuster would follow the same practice schedule he did last week, when efforts to return to game action from a knee injury ultimately were unsuccessful.

Smith-Schuster, though, is already behind schedule.

Smith-Schuster was listed as a limited participant in practice Wednesday. Last week, Smith-Schuster was on the official injury report as a full participant on Wednesday, though that deteriorated to limited by Thursday and out on Friday.

Vance McDonald, though, is ahead of schedule compared to last week in his hopeful return from injury. McDonald (concussion protocol) was a full participant Wednesday.

The only other player listed on the injury report other than for a day of rest was reserve cornerback Artie Burns, who had an illness.

Of note among players who got a “veteran’s day off” was T.J. Watt, the 25-year-old, third-year outside linebacker given rest by Tomlin for the first time in his career.
