Katie James repeats as Women's WPGA Amateur champion
The only player in the 18-player field under par Tuesday, Katie James made it a runaway repeat at the Isaly’s Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Women’s Amateur at Green Oaks Country Club in Verona.
James, an incoming junior at Southern Methodist and a Shady Side Academy alum, carded a 6-under-par 67 for a six-shot victory in the 12th annual event.
Katie Miller and Jessica Meyers tied for second at even 73.
A scorecard covered with circles showed six birdies and an eagle for James, who closed with back-to-back bogeys. She eagled the 460-yard par-5 13th to get to 8-under.
She made the turn in 4-under 34 on the way to again raising the Judy Oliver Trophy.
James, who won the West Penn Amateur on her home course of Fox Chapel Golf Club last season, has returned to top form after a pair of knee surgeries in the past year.
The first operation came last fall after she suffered a torn meniscus. The Amateur was her first post-surgery tournament.
Miller, who is a new member at Green Oaks, had four birdies and four bogeys. The former Hempfield and North Carolina standout made the turn in 1-under but was even through 14.
Meyers, an Oakland Catholic grad who plays at Notre Dame, also carded four birdies and bogeys and could not return to red numbers after 14.
Rounding out the top 10 were Christina Lewis (78), Victoria Witouski (78), Julia Genuardi (80), Laura Hilger (81), Eva Bulger (81), Ella McRoberts (82) and Marissa Malosh (83).
