LeSean McCoy to retire as member of Philadelphia Eagles
Harrisburg native and former Pitt star LeSean McCoy will officially retire as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday, the team announced.
McCoy, an all-time franchise great at running back, will be honored at Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Lincoln Financial Field as the Eagles Legend of the Game.
The former Bishop McDevitt star ends his 12-year NFL career with 11,102 rushing yards and 73 rushing touchdowns, along with 15,000 yards from scrimmage and 89 total touchdowns. McCoy also made six Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams while being named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame All-2010s Team.
McCoy, 33, won Super Bowl rings with the Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in each of the past two years.
The Eagles drafted McCoy out of Pitt with the No. 53 overall pick in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft. McCoy spent the first six years of his career in Philadelphia, where he ranks first in rushing yards (6,792), second in rushing attempts (1,461), third in rushing touchdowns (44) and third in rushing average (4.7).
He set single-season franchise records for rushing yards (1,607) in 2013 and rushing touchdowns (17) in 2011, and he also led the NFL in yards from scrimmage in 2013 with 2,146.
“LeSean possessed a unique combination of speed, elusiveness, and an exceptional playmaking ability that made him one of the most dynamic players in the league, and one of the most productive players in the history of our franchise,” Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said in a release.
“LeSean carried himself with a rare blend of confidence and youthful enthusiasm, but he also was driven by a desire to be one of the all-time greats at the running back position, and that’s what made him such an exciting player to be around and watch every week.
“He provided so many memorable plays and performances over the course of his career. We are honored to share in this special day with LeSean and look forward to recognizing him as the Eagles Legend of the Game on Sunday.”
The Eagles traded McCoy to the Buffalo Bills after the 2014 season, and he spent four seasons in Buffalo before his final years in Kansas City and Tampa Bay.
The Chiefs are coached by former Eagles coach Andy Reid, who drafted McCoy in 2009 and was in Philadelphia for the first four years of the running back’s career. The game is scheduled to kick at 1 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field in South Philly.
