Long way to go? Oddsmakers peg Steelers twice as unlikely to win Super Bowl as Jets, Jaguars
Super Bowl LVIII is 363 days away. If the people who set the betting lines have anything to say anything about it, don’t bet on the Pittsburgh Steelers playing in it.
Then again, a wager on the Steelers would pay off quite handsomely if they do lift the Lombardi Trophy on Feb. 11, 2024.
The Steelers opened up at 50-to-1 to win the Super Bowl at the end of the 2023 season, according to betonline.ag. Only nine of the NFL’s 32 teams have lower odds of winning next year’s championship, and among those rated as having a better chance are franchises the proud Steelers’ fanbase typically laughs at. The Cleveland Browns (40-to-1) and Detroit Lions (33-to-1) are among them.
But what perhaps could be most sobering to Steelers fans comes among the group of teams at 25-to-1. This includes the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos.
- The Jets went 7-10 last season, their 12th consecutive without a playoff berth.
- The Broncos went 5-12 for their third consecutive last-place finish.
- The Jaguars are certainly on an upward trajectory — but their 9-8 season provided only their second winning record since 2007.
But New York, Denver and Jacksonville all are viewed by those who profit off such prognostication as having twice as good a shot of winning next year’s Super Bowl as the Steelers.
Hours after winning 38-35 in Super Bowl XLVII, the Kansas City Chiefs (5-to-1) were installed as the favorites to win next year. The team they beat, the Philadelphia Eagles, are the No. 2 pick at 7-to-1. The Buffalo Bills (8-to-1), San Francisco 49ers (8-to-1) and AFC North champion Cincinnati Bengals (9-to-1) round out the top five.
The Steelers’ rival Baltimore Ravens are tied with the Jets, Broncos, Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders for eighth (25-to-1). The Steelers, who finished 9-8 last season, have the worst odds among AFC North teams.
Free agency starts the week of March 13, and the draft will be April 27-29, in Kansas City.
