Longtime Pittsburgh Penguins head athletic trainer Chris Stewart has resigned from his position after 18 seasons with the team.

Per a team spokesperson, Stewart is stepping away from the job to get away from the grind the position presents.

A native of Johnstown, Stewart joined the Penguins in 2006 and was a member of the franchise’s three most recent Stanley Cup championships in 2009, 2016 and 2017.

In total, Stewart has spent 29 years as an athletic trainer. His career began in 1996-97 as head athletic trainer of the former Johnstown Chiefs team of the ECHL. After a single season — and a Stanley Cup championship — with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2005-06 as an associate athletic trainer, Stewart joined the Penguins.
