With the start of the Atlantic 10 Tournament a week away, Duquesne has hit a late-season slide.
Tyler Cochran scored 21 points, including a three-point play during a key second-half run, as Rhode Island handed the Dukes their fourth consecutive loss, 64-52, Wednesday night at Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I.
Cochran added 10 rebounds and six steals for the Rams (16-14, 7-10), who avenged a 76-61 loss to Duquesne on Feb. 1 at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
R.J. Johnson added 14 points for Rhode Island.
Tarence Guinyard led Duquesne (16-14, 8-9) with 18 points, sending him over 1,000 for his career. Jimmie Williams chipped in 10 for the Dukes, who return to UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse for the annual Chuck Cooper Classic at 2 p.m. Saturday against Richmond in the regular-season finale.
The A-10 Tournament will be held March 11-15 at PPG Paints Arena.
Guinyard, a senior point guard, leads the Dukes in scoring after transferring from UT Martin before the start of the season. He’s one of six players who will be honored during Senior Day on Saturday at Duquesne.
The Dukes, who led 24-19 at halftime, tied the score, 37-37, on a Guinyard layup with 10 minutes to go. But Rhode Island used a 7-2 run to take the lead for good.
The Rams shot 47% (24 for 51) but made just 2 of 17 shots from 3-point range. Duquesne finished at 34% (16 for 47) and made 5 for 20 from long range. Both teams snared 31 rebounds.
