Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp lifts up the trophy as he celebrates with players after winning the Champions League final soccer match between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, June 1, 2019. Jurgen Klopp announced Friday he will step down as Liverpool manager at end of this season.

The Steelers are trying to convince a promising young offensive mind to take the job as offensive coordinator and conquer the notion that you can’t shine excrement. They might have to settle for older and recycled.

Here’s the solution: Pull a reverse “Ted Lasso” and hire Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp just resigned as Liverpool FC manager, effective at season’s end.

Klopp’s the best coach/manager I’ve ever witnessed, superseding Chuck Noll and Herb Brooks. That’s not said lightly.

In his nine seasons as Liverpool FC manager, Klopp got the maximum out of his team and every individual player. He connected with the club, its players and its supporters in a fashion both electric and unimaginable. Klopp battled uphill and won everything there is to win.

Klopp came off as cartoonish at first. Showbiz. But it was a charismatic sheen on top of a foundation of strength, sincerity, unity and brilliance.

Could Klopp figure out American football? Absolutely.

Could he coax greatness out of Kenny Pickett? That would be challenging.

General William Tecumseh Sherman is another alternative the Steelers should consider. Never mind a two-minute drill. Forget about the red zone. Sherman drove all the way to the ocean. Right through Atlanta. Bill Belichick can’t even get a job in Atlanta.

Sherman is dead. But so is Pickett’s arm. It’s a good match.

Quarterback is the problem. Not offensive coordinator. Until the Steelers have better quarterbacks, they won’t attract a proper coordinator. Nor will it much matter who the coordinator is.

Pittsburgh isn’t where coaching careers get launched. It’s where they come to die. As evidenced by Mike Tomlin’s abject lack of a coaching tree.

Forget the reverse “Ted Lasso.” I want what’s best for Klopp. Working under Tomlin and with Pickett doesn’t fit that description. You’re signing up to be a scapegoat.

That’s not what’s best for anybody who can do better.
