Online court records say Retton, 57, was arrested on May 17 in Fairmont, W. Va. She was charged with one count of driving under influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs.

Fairmont police stopped Retton following a report about a person in a Porsche driving erratically. Retton smelled of alcohol and was slurring her words, according to a criminal complaint. She failed a field sobriety test, police said.

Police said they found Retton in her car in a nearby AutoZone parking lot with a screw-top bottle of wine in her passenger seat, according to the complaint. She refused a roadside breath test and blood test.

She was later released on a $1,500 bond. Her lawyer Edmund Rollo declined comment on Tuesday.

Retton, American gymnast and icon, became the first woman to win an all-around Olympic gold medal in 1984.

She is a native of of Fairmont, which is located in Marion County, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

Retton made headlines last year when her daughter revealed on social media that she was battling “a very rare form of pneumonia.”

Retton received more than $450,000 in donations despite a lack of transparency about the details of her illness and the ways that the donations were being used. The donations came after her daughter revealed that Retton did not have insurance.

She appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” in January 2024 with an oxygen tube to discuss her monthlong hospital stay. She said, at one point, doctors “were about to put her on life support.”
