The Penguins’ Matt Murray looks on during their game at PPG Paints Arena on Feb. 11, 2020.

Matt Murray took to social media to thank Pittsburgh for his time here.

After news of his trade Wednesday to the Ottawa Senators for a second-round pick and mid-level forward prospect, he posted a message on his Instagram saying, “Thank you, Pittsburgh for some incredible years. I cherished every opportunity I had to step onto the ice in a Penguins jersey.”

He also thanked the city of Pittsburgh and the team.

He ended the post with a shout out to his teammates.

“Most importantly, to all of my teammates, thank you for your friendship, your insights, and for always having my back,” he wrote. “It means the world to me. I am truly grateful for every opportunity.”

On Thursday Murray was already looking forward to the future with the Senators.

“I see a team that’s heading in the right direction and heading there quickly,” he said while talking to the media about his new team.

A third-round pick in 2012, Murray had been the team’s starting goaltender for parts of the past five seasons.

He made his debut in the NHL during the 2015-16 season and then helped lead the Penguins to two Stanley Cups — in 2016 and 2017 — and replaced long-time goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.

The team did not advance out of the opening round of the playoffs this year and in the off-season the Penguins signed Tristan Jarry to a three-year contract extension.
