Mike Tomlin might be rethinking his decision to swap out punters before the start of the regular season.
With 38-year-old Dustin Colquitt possessing an NFL-worst 37.1 yards net punting average, the Steelers brought in former punter Jordan Berry for a tryout Monday, according to several reports.
Tomlin acknowledged Tuesday at his weekly news conference Colquitt’s punting has not been “up to snuff.”
Colquitt averaged 36.6 net yards on five punts Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.
Colquitt’s net average has dropped 4 yards from the 41.2 net average he maintained last year with Kansas City, which elected to let Colquitt test free agency after a 15-year career with the Chiefs.
Colquitt signed with the Steelers the week before the season opener, ending Berry’s five-year tenure with the team.
In 2019, Berry averaged 40.9 net yards, which ranked No. 19.
“We’ve got to get better in that area,” Tomlin said, “and we’re willing to do whatever is required in an effort to do so.”
Bringing in Berry could be a way of motivating Colquitt. When Berry struggled early in the 2018 season, Tomlin brought in several punters for a workout, yet Berry held onto his job.
The Steelers also have rookie punter Corliss Waitman on the practice squad.
