Mike Tomlin: Steelers open to helping Antonio Brown – but not to signing him

Brown was granted bail on Friday after spending the night in a Florida jail. The wide receiver will have to pay a bond of $110,000, surrender his passport, wear a monitor, get mental health evaluation and pass random drug tests. He also can’t have guns. Brown is accused of attacking the driver of a moving truck that carried some of his possessions from California.

As Antonio Brown continues on an apparent effort to regain favor in the NFL in hopes of continuing his playing career in 2020, his former head coach said not to expect it to be in Pittsburgh.

During his ESPN “First Take” appearance ostensibly to stand up for Mason Rudolph, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin also was asked about a possible reunion with Brown. Brown of course, starred for the Steelers for nine seasons before a trade to the Oakland Raiders last March. Since Brown was released by the Raiders and (after one game) the New England Patriots, he has been arrested and faced civil suits.

Although an ongoing NFL investigation hasn’t yet cleared Brown to play without first serving a possible suspension or other discipline, speculation has ensued about what teams might have interest in him.

The Steelers, per Tomlin, “at this time” are not one of them.

“I’ll say this: once a Steeler, always a Steeler,” Tomlin said Monday morning on ESPN. “We had great success over the course of nine-plus years…

“We will always be interested in his development as a man, and we will be open to assisting him in that. But we have no current business interest at this time.”
